Church Service & Sermon: "It's a Beautiful Thing"

  • River Valley Community Church 888 S. Edgelawn Drive, Unit 1749 Aurora United States (map)

This Sunday, we will be looking at Matthew 26:1-13.  As we do, we will be looking at a series of questions:

Who, or what do I love?

Who, or what do I trust?

Who, or what do I serve?

And how I answer these questions determines my thoughts and actions.

In the story, Mary did a beautiful thing for Jesus,  she "came up to him with an alabaster flask of costly ointment, and she poured it on his head as he reclined at table." This ointment was very expensive and could have been sold for a large amount of money, money that could have been given to the poor or lined the pocket of a deceitful apostle.

What the world does not understand, Jesus does.

Concerning the woman, Jesus said, "Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me".

Remember, what most people consider a waste, Jesus sees as honoring Him. What is precious in our sight is not always the same as what is valuable in Jesus' sight. What is dear to Him is our humility and devotion to Him!

Mary was commended by Jesus for her devotion.  Then He turned an attempt to give Him honor into one of preparing Him for the most significant work ever done on our behalf. What was seen by others as a waste ended up to be the highest honor a person has ever done for our Lord!

How do we honor Him? We need to examine our motivations. The motivation of Judas was to betray; Mary's was to honor. What is ours? Regularly, we will have opportunities to serve. The question becomes, how will we respond to those opportunities?

This Sunday, we will be looking at what it means to do a beautiful thing for the Lord.
